Random Thoughts

Stir-frying a Creative Concept

So first blog of the semester this time is for portfolio class, once again with Mr. Paco Melo.

Anyway, this article talks about this analogy called "The Core Creative Concept in Branding" created by Kim Zarney (which is weird that a guy is name Kim :P) he said that desing briefs are like stir frying cooking.

Kim said that the key to prepare stir fry you need to hace ready all your ingredients before you get started. This will be more easy and you'll save time. I'ts the same with design you need all the stuff to flow easily and design stuff more quickly.

The autor says that the clients needs design for yesterday (ASAP) and we as designers need to adpt to the schedule of the client. I'm not a 100% agree to this statement because almost all the time clients are so difficult, like they change the copy when the design is almost over ¬¬.

There are some "inflexible elements" like te budget we need to know what's the budget of the client and we need to work with that budget, for example you have this great idea but you need like a 100 box to print this awesome flyer but the client budget is 50 dlls. For this case you can have a plan B. You need like a program of what you will need and when you have to do it.

You need to research about the project like the target, the competiton, why etc.

So graphic design stir-frying is very important to make the process of graphic design more easy.

Ta Ta! :P

Jeff Han demos his breakthrough touchscreen

Remember that movies like Batman and Iron Man 2 (which sucks) that they use this touchscreen computers?

The future is very near… This guy Jeff Han shows us this glass table that is a touchscreen computer, so no more mouse, CPU or a physical keyboard. This sound kind of cheap right? Well Jeff said that it is :D

I imagine myself using one of this new computers for design and I think will feel like painting a landscape. You will feel more proud of the result :P (Ok I think I need to sleep…)

I'm sorprised how technology is growing so fast!!!

Magazine Art Direction for the iPad

After seeing this video I'm kind of craving for an iPad.

This video talks about the Art direction of e-magazines. I want to go to best buy grab an ipad and interact with a magazine!

So like the song video killed the radio star…e-magazines killed the printed magazine, but I rather printed magazines, because after reading you can make crafts with them :D

Anyway… is so atractive how magazines are creating stuff for the reader to interact with the magazine, I think that they want to make the reader feel more a part of this magazine, with all the "animations".

Also is very cool that magazines are giving job to people that work in web related stuff, so this is giving more work to people :)

In a future I want to read my Nylon mag on iPad :D

Here is the video :)

The Future of Web Content

This entry is about something that wrote this guy Jeremy Allaire that is the founder and CEO of Brightcove. I feel like they are talking me in other language because I'm not that kind of facinating with making complex web stuff. But anyways… I'll write about this.

The first company of this guy (Allaire) and Macromedia made this a new plataform for web that uses Macromedia Flash Player and also you can have animations on your web page, very interesting huh?At that time so all the web pages had all this kind of animation, so the user interact with the web page in very different ways.

So in 2003- 2004 new flash players born and this cool tool could be used to watch videos online so You tube was born>

The powerful companies like Apple>

The question is what the hell will happen with html 5 and flash? Flash will die? I think it deppends on what you want to do… like if you want to do something with a video probably you will need to use both of them!

So now…what will be the new tendency? the mobile devices, like cellphones, ipads and all that cool and expensive stuff, like I said this decade is all about smart stuff :P So all the people that work on web related need to be able to make a web page for web page on mobile devices and apps.

I don't know if this blog entry have a sense at all… but like I said this kind of topics… are difficult to understand for me…

More Brains

My team will be Diana and Marianela and we talk about what can we do for the last project of multimedia…

When we were in the second obligatory week of vacations we were doing homewok together and I show them this video:

So we start joking about more brains :P

Then we came up with the idea of doing a flash game about a zombie eating brains and saying more brains.

Our influence for this game is fly guy that is a game that you don't have a winner or a loser you only see what happens with the stuff that are flying. And when you finish the route fly guy is dancing with a monkey and a hawaiian girl. So we want to make something similar.

More Brains!

Natasha Tsakos' multimedia theatrical adventure

This woman starts talking how she loves movies and how she starts drawing pictures in her head to a story. It was cool to see how she made rooms instead of squares to draw her storyboard.

Then she starts like a mimic play with sounds and you can understand everything she is doing only listening. She don't need the actual furniture, people etc. She convine the sound with lights and graphics to complement her number.

The important thing is that we don't necesaarily need to talk to the audience to understand what we are trying to say. We can talk in different ways to people understand what are we saying without words

The video is very interesting so watch it :)

The Importance of Visual Literacy

So this is a conversation with Martin Scorsese. He starts talking about when he was a kid his always went to see movies, and watch television and how the visual literacy was happening at the time the director the writter and the cinematographer create a kind of intelligence that was trying to tell a story and they are focusing your eyes in how to see whats happening. An important instrument to made this were the lenses they use to film and the camera movement.

A quote that I think is very interesting is "How ideas and emotions are to express through a visual form". It's like a formula to make audiovisual stuff. Because is more easy to catch the attention of the people, and they will understand what are you talking about.

He also talks about violence in film and the power of subliminal messages but I found it a little bit boring.

The Danish Poet

So today I think it was my favorite class of multimedia :P we saw short films about a lot of stuff, some of them were made by pixar, others by other people. The thing is we see different types of animation, like the traditional one made frame by frame with watercolor, or other made like a videogame. I will write about a short film that I felt in love in class today.

The name of this short film is The Danish Poet, at first I was not to interested in the short film, in the first minute, Marianela my classmate and friend told me "Is something you will do" and I was like yeah right. So when I saw house of the poet, I thought this will be interesting, because the drawing it was very simple, then the story is amazing I know its very cheesy but I just felt in love about all this short film.

I don't see nothing bad about this short film. I love the colors, the drawings, the story, the simplicity etc! I will love to learn how to make the outlines of a drawing move. (yes I'm obsess with this!) So I don't know what else to say, but Thanks Paco for this!

I leave this post with the short film! and a screen shot of the goats ♥!

Enjoy it! n_n

The wired tablet App

So wired magazine made an app for iPad, iPod Touch, iPhone etc. This app consist in read the magazine in your favorite device. I think is cool because, the suscription will be cheaper, you will have it in "your hands" as soon the magazine comes out, as reader you will have more interactivity with the magazine and your device like the car ad that you can see a 360 view of the car this is more complete way to sell your product, you will have them in digital files and not a pile of old magazines in your room, so that reduces space, also if you like a picture or a article you can print it.

So this is a new era of magazines forget about printing and think about interactivity.

iPad, the giant iPod?

So I start my first blog of my multimedia class which is in english so I have to write in english, first I apologies if I make mistakes writing because is been a while of not writing in this language.

Watching for the first time the famous keynote with the great Steve Jobs about Apple new product The iPad, relased last wednesday (January 27th 2010). One good thing about iPad is that you can take it everywhere, because is not heavy, is slim, and has a size like a magazine. Some people says that is a giant iPod, but I see it more like a keyboard-less computer. This is good because many careers can used, like a graphic designer, can download the pantone catalog, photoshop, etc. Also, iPad have iWork which is awesome, because business people can make a presentation while flying to an other city, or a student can write an essay for a class so is amazing.

I think iPad need a usb port, so you can print stuff, like a document from iWork, or still working on a document in your computer, so you need to transfer your documents and not all the computers have bluetooth. Also it could be a good idea to have a web cam so people can have video conference, without having a computer.

iPad is a great invent for this new decade, first because maybe it will develop reading to new generations that no read, also maybe it will become a new computer, and this can open new development of graphic design as multimedia for ebooks, or magazines.

I have a confession to make I'm not craving for an iPad as I'm for an iPhone, but after seeing the keynote I found this very useful, for everybody, like a mom that tries to entretain her kids, to a buisness man that work while flying, to somebody that only wants to chill and read a e-book.

I found this awesome pic while looking for an iPad pic I can't stop laughing
